A valuable resource in Grand County is the Grand County Pet Pals. This wonderful organization supports the Grand County Animal Shelter. If you are currently on the lookout for a new pet or just want to help out some animals in need, you can do so by clicking here!

LibrariesThe Grand County Library District has libraries in Fraser, Granby, Hot Sulphur Springs, Juniper @ Grand Lake, and Kremmling.

Even if you are not a resident of Grand County, the libraries can be valuable resources while you are visiting.  Non-residents have several options.  They may purchase a library card valid for one year for $20.00 (allows access to all the services and collections of Grand County Libraries), if they have a valid library card from any participating Colorado Library Card (CLC) and an ID with a current mailing address (need not be a Grand County address), they may obtain a library card at no charge.  And finally, materials may be borrowed--at no charge--from the unprocessed paperback collections of certain branches, Fraser Valley Library being one of them.  Check out the GCLD website at:

Secret Stash #4:

Secret Stash #4Upper Ice Hill-Lower Cherokee- (Long Trail and Upper Cherokee option)

Helli’s Hills-Lower Ice Hill

Level of Difficulty:  Scream and Shout to Kick Butt

This is a good climbing route, great workout and technical in spots. 2-3 Hours

Start in the town of Winter Park. Ride up Vasquez road, past the railroad tracks, take the first left on Arapaho Road.    Take the second left on Little Vasquez which dead ends into the National Forest.

Ride a few minutes and look on the left side of the road for the sign that says Ice Hill, turn left on Ice hill.  This meanders along until it makes a gradual right turn, get into your lower gear for a short steep climb.  Stay on this trail as it climbs and drops down until it intersects with the “Tracks Trail” Turn right on the Tracks trail, which is named because it runs parallel to the railroad tracks.

Look for a single track trail on your right just a couple minutes later,  the trail then splits, stay right at the split on Lower Cherokee.    This is a nice climb to pace yourself and enjoy the workout.   When you get to the top of Cherokee, you will be at a dirt road called Tunnel Hill.

LONG RIDE OPTION: Turn left at the top of Cherokee, ride Tunnel Hill  to the Ski area, look for long Long  Trail on your right, ride up Long Trail to Upper Cherokee, turn Right on  Upper Cherokee, enjoy a fun fast slightly downhill back to Tunnel Hill turn left (or up) on road.

Turn right on Tunnel Hill or uphill  and the road will climb gradually.  When you come to the second small clearing on your right, look for a single track that takes off to the North.    No sign for this trail, but is affectionately called Helli’s Nuts.  A technical, challenging trail that will take you back to the middle section of Ice Hill.

Turn Left when Ice Hill intersects, ride down the short but steep slope and look for a fork in the trail and stay right.  This is lower Ice hill, which is another way back to Little Vasquez  Road where the ride began.  Turn right  to head back to town and finish your ride.

(For a long ride, follow all of these directions, for a shorter ride, do not ride the paragraph in italics.)

Mountain Bike Trail Etiquette

Share the trail with all other users. To keep our trails safe and enjoyable for everyone remember the following rules of thumb:

  • Always yield to horses

  • Always yield to hikers

  • Always yield to the uphill rider

  • Don’t ride through slippery muddy trails, walk around them, or chose another route if it is too wet, to prevent erosion and to preserve them for future generations

  • Stay on the trail

  • Respect all National Forest closures
